BS EN 124 · BS 497
Cast and ductile iron covers and gratings to BS EN 124 and BS 497, in round, square and special shapes. ESTN supplies the heavy-duty end of the range — D400 and E600 — for carriageway, dock and industrial loading.
Load classes
EN 124 divides covers into six classes by bearing capacity. ESTN supplies D400 and E600. Lighter classes and F900 are shown for reference only.
| Group | Class | Load bearing kN | Load bearing tonnes | Typical position | Supplied |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A15 | 15 | 1.5 | Pedestrian areas | — |
| 2 | B125 | 125 | 12.5 | Footways, non-motorised lanes | — |
| 3 | C250 | 250 | 25 | Kerbside channels, verges | — |
| 4 | D400 | 400 | 40 | Carriageways, hard shoulders | Yes |
| 5 | E600 | 600 | 60 | Docks, aircraft pavements, industrial yards | Yes |
| 6 | F900 | 900 | 90 | Special heavy-load areas | — |
Selection
EN 124 assigns class by where the cover sits in the cross-section. Side walks and non-motorised lanes take the lighter groups; the running carriageway and the 0.2–0.5 m kerb zone take D400; docks, aircraft pavements and heavy industrial yards take E600.
